I have been a clinical practitioner for over 30 years, struggling with the problems of an inadequate and unresponsive health care system. I have earned credentials and practiced as a school, counseling, and clinical psychologist; I have studied, researched, and written in the areas of social psychology, the psychology of religion, chemical abuse, forensic psychology, assessment and measurement, childhood sexual abuse, education, sleep, depression, sexual behavior, paraphilias, rape, and victimization of women. As a scientist, I have been funded for over 20 years by various Institutes of Health to develop and test psychotherapy models; I have published 15 books and over 350 articles; I have edited two major journals and been an advisor to many others. I have been presented with a variety of awards and recognitions from APA and other state, national, and international organizations for my contributions to practice and science. I have presided over two APA Divisions, served as a member of Council on two separate occasions, been a member of the Board of Editors, and served on a variety of committees. As a teacher, I have run programs in three major medical schools, taught in three university-based graduate schools, and am now Director of Training and Faculty Chair at Palo Alto University (formerly Pacific Graduate School of Psychology). I am also Professor Emeritus at the University of California Santa Barbara and Director of the National Center on Disaster Psychology and Terrorism in Palo Alto.
